Born in Oregon, Capt Lowry was a member of the Oregon State College Varsity track team, and earned a Bachelors of Science in Science in 1955. While serving with the 441st Bomber Squadron, he was killed when the B-52F Stratofortress he was a radar-operator on crashed into another B-52F over the south China Sea. The planes were part of a force en route to target, a Viet Cong installation 28 miles north of Saigon, in South Vietnam. His body was never recovered. He was survived by his wife, three daughters, parents and sister.
