Maj. Young was born in St. Helen, Oregon. He earned a degree in Civil Engineering and a Minor in Aerospace Studies while attending Oregon State University. While serving with the 142 Fighter Wing, he flew an F-15 Eagle during a dogfight practice with Texas Marine Corps Reserve pilots when he crashed over the Pacific Ocean. The final report stated that he had suffered from spatial distortion, which caused him not to know his altitude, attitude, or airspeed, as a result he flew his aircraft into the ocean. His name can be found on the Remembrance Rug by Symbol #5110.
He was one of the two F-15 Pilots who flew the flyover for the 2006 Civil War football game in Reser Stadium
