McConnell, Robert Bruce

Lt. McConnell's aircraft, a B-24, was on a mission from midway to Wake Island when they were attacked by Japanese Zeros. One of the Zeros lost control and hit the B-24 in the tail tearing off the left rudder and elevator. The B-24D Buno # 42-40676 crashed into the ocean, none of the 11 crew members survived. Tracers from the waist gun were seen until the plane hit the water and exploded. Missing Air Crew Report 314.

Haller, Hartphey C

Born in Telocaset, Oregon 1st Lt Haller was an only child. He studied Chemical Engineering while attending Oregon State College, enlisting on 19 Mar 1943. While serving with the Army Air Force 502nd Bomb Group, 402nd Bomber Squadron 20th Air Force, he was one of ten airmen killed when his B-29 Superfortress #44-83899 that he was a radar navigator on crashed, five miles northeast of Isley Field, on Saipan Island. He was survived by his parents.

Elden, Ralph Waldo

Born in Manhattan, New York, Lt Elden studied engineering while attending Oregon State College for a year. He enlisted into the Navy in 1931. Past this no better explanation can be given other than by the words written by George Edmonston Jr. in the December 2000 Oregon Stater. “At approximately 31 minutes past 1 p.m., Japanese submarine I-168 fired four torpedoes in the direction of the aircraft carrier USS Yorktown, which at that time was steaming in close proximity to Hammann.
