Young, Gregory Dean

Maj. Young was born in St. Helen, Oregon. He earned a degree in Civil Engineering and a Minor in Aerospace Studies while attending Oregon State University. While serving with the 142 Fighter Wing, he flew an F-15 Eagle during a dogfight practice with Texas Marine Corps Reserve pilots when he crashed over the Pacific Ocean. The final report stated that he had suffered from spatial distortion, which caused him not to know his altitude, attitude, or airspeed, as a result he flew his aircraft into the ocean. His name can be found on the Remembrance Rug by Symbol #5110.

Wilkins, John Campbell

Maj. Wilkins was born in Portland Oregon. While serving with the 20th Fighter Group He went missing. According to the Missing Air Crew Report (MACR) #1437 Maj Wilkins had problems taking off for his mission on 7 Nov 1944, he ended up taking off on the wrong runway 7 minutes after his formation had already left. According to the report there were no communications after takeoff, neither he nor his P-38H Buno #42-67022 were seen again. He left behind a wife and two kids.

Stone, Gregory Lewis "Linus"

Major Gregory Stone left the Air Force in 2000 and joined the Air National guard. Maj Stone was killed in Kuwait by Army Sgt Asan Akbar when Akbar threw grenades into his unit’s tents on 22 Mar 2003 on Camp Pennsylvania, Kuwait and started shooting at the soldiers trying to get out of the tents. Maj Stone died three days later from injuries from the grenades on Camp Udairi. Maj Stone was a B-1 pilot.

Stevenson, Harold

Maj. Stevenson was taken hostage during the fall of Bataan and was forced through the death march. He was labeled MIA in May of 1942 and POW that December. He survived the bombing of the POW transport ship Oryoku Maru on 15 Dec 1944, the surviving POWs and Maj Stevenson were then transferred to the Enoura Maru which was also bombed 9 Jan 1945. The survivors of the Enoura Maru were then put onto the Brazil Maru, which wasn’t cleaned from the feces of the livestock it carried prior, nor was it packed with food for the prisoners.  Harold Stevenson didn’t survive the trip on the Brazil.

Kircher, Albert Joseph Jr

Born in Nashville, Tennessee Maj Kircher graduated with a Bachelors of Science in Mines while he was at Oregon Agricultural College. He went missing while serving with the Army Corps of Engineers out of Luzon Philippines and was taken as a prisoner of war by the Japanese. We cannot find which camp he was taken to or when he became a hostage, but we do know Maj Kircher died while on a “Hell Ship” one of the Japanese prisoner transport ships that was sunk by American Forces. Hell Ships weren’t marked with POW on the side. He was survived by his mother and sister.  

Johnson, Ralph F

Maj. Johnson was the commander of the Army Air Corps 15th Air Force, 325th Fighting Group, 319th Fighter Squadron.

Hansen, Charles E. Jr.

Born in Osceola Nebraska, Maj Charles Hansen earned a Bachelors of Science in Agriculture from Oregon State College. He was the pilot of the B-29 Superfortress “The First Ship” in which Roy Porter, NBC Correspondent, rode in the first attack on Japan. His plane was nicknamed that at it was the first B-29 to be flown by it’s own crew overseas from the US, it was also the first to fly the span between India and China and was the first to be attacked by the Japanese fighter planes during that span.
