Schultz, Maynard Conrad

“Lt. Col. Schultz of San Diego, the battalion commander and a fearless bull of a man, yet subtle in his powers of understanding, Captain Gene Mundy (the operations officer) from Northwestern and Mt. Carmel, Illinois, and I set out for a regimental command post shortly after daybreak. Our walk back showed that in our sector we held a beach head at least 1,000 yards deep, that several batteries of artillery were established, and that we were definitely down in the flat with poor observation, while the Japanese retained altitude, observation, and weapons.

Pokorney, Frederick Eben Jr.

Born in San Antonio, Texas 1st Lt Pokorney spent most of his childhood in Nevada, and graduated from Oregon State University in 2001 with a Bachelor of Science through the Liberal Arts College. While serving with the Marine Corps Headquarters Battery, 1st Battalion, 10th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Brigade he was killed when his unit was attacked by Iraqi soldiers pretending to surrender in An Nasiriyah, Iraq. He was survived by his wife, daughter, parents, and his four siblings.  

Parks, Floyd Elwood

Born in Elgin, Oregon, 2nd Lt Parks studied Agriculture during his time at Oregon State College. Lt. Floyd Ellwood Parks was a platoon leader in B Company, 2nd Marines. In William W. Rogal's book "Guadalcanal, Tarawa and Beyond: A Mud Marine's Memoir of the Pacific Island War" he tells of Parks' death. Their battalion was being transferred by towed barges from the island of Tulagi to Guadalcanal. "The lead boat being pulled by the other YP couldn't take the strain and its entire bow was pulled off, dumping the occupants, the first platoon of B Company, into the sea.

Oliver, Michael Dee

Born in Enterprise, Oregon, PFC Oliver studied agriculture during his time at Oregon State University. While serving with the Marine Corps’ F Company, Battalion Landing Team 2/4, 9th Marine Amphibious Brigade “on May 1st the Battalion participated in Operation NAPOLEON/SALINE within the Cua Viet River area complex in northern Quang Tri Province. At first light Company B, 1st Battalion, 3d Marines crossed the Song Bo Dieu and joined Company H of the 4th Marines moving towards Dai Do with Company F joining the sweep.
