Vessey, William Thomas

SSgt. Vessey was born in Oregon City, Oregon. He graduated from Oregon State College in 1943, while going to school he was the Sports Editor of the Barometer, and won a campus-wide softball competition in the Spring of 1942. While serving with the 1st Marine Battalion, 28th Marine Infantry, 5th Marine Division, SSgt. Vessey was a correspondent. He was apart of the initial assault on Mount Suribachi and within three hours of landing he had written his eye witness account of the beginning of the invasion.

Mann, Kenneth Merlin

SSgt Mann registered for the draft in McMinnville Oregon on 16 Oct 1940, he was called to service on 15 Dec 1943. He went missing in May of 1945 after his B-24 Liberator “Green Hornet” Buno # 44-40286 of which he was the Tail Gunner failed to return from a mission after being shot down by enemy anti-aircraft fire. He was later declared to be killed in action. He was survived by his mother, brother, and wife.
