Admission
Students must be admitted to a degree program at Oregon State University
Residency
The student must meet Oregon residency requirements as stipulated within OAR 580-010-0030 through 580-010-0045. This program does not apply to nonresident students or study abroad programs.
Criteria
In order to be eligible, students must meet one of two sets of criteria:
1) The student must be a child (includes adopted child or stepchild) of a Purple Heart recipient, alive or deceased, who was relieved or discharged from service in the Armed Forces of the United States with either an honorable discharge or a general discharge under honorable conditions and was awarded the Purple Heart in 2001 or thereafter for wounds received in combat.
OR
2) The child (includes adopted child or stepchild), spouse, or unmarried surviving spouse of a member of the United States Armed Forces who:
a) Died while on active duty, or
b) Died as a result of a military service-connected disability, or
c) Is 100% disabled as the result of a military service-connected disability as certified by the Department of Veterans Affairs or any branch of the Armed Forces of the United States. (An eligible child must be 31 years of age or younger at the time the child applies for the waiver.)

This waiver is only for a qualified student's first bachelor's and/or master's degree

An eligible child is eligible for a waiver for a master's degree program if they applied for and received a waiver for a bachelor's degree when the child was 31 years of age or younger; or Provides proof of eligibility for the Chapter 35 Survivors’ and Dependents’ Educational Assistance program administered by the United States Department of Veterans Affairs |

OSU Policies
Transfer Student Policy
If an eligible child received the Veterans' Dependent Tuition Waiver at another Oregon public institution and transfers to Oregon State University without a break in enrollment, the age requirement may be waived. Documentation of continuous enrollment and prior waiver must be submitted with the OSU waiver application.
2nd Master's Degree Policy
If an eligible spouse, or unmarried surviving spouse, previously earned a first master's degree without receiving the dependent tuition waiver due to ineligibility at that time, they may be eligible to receive the waiver for their first master's program at Oregon State university.
Award Amount
The maximum waiver granted under this program shall be:
1) The total number of attempted credit hours equal to four years of full-time attendance for a first baccalaureate degree, and
2) The total number of attempted credit hours equal to two years of full-time attendance for a first master’s degree.
Important Information
- This waiver covers 100% of the tuition costs and may be incompatible with other tuition waivers or benefits. If you have another type of aid specifically to cover tuition, please reach out to the Office of Finanacial Aid to discuss the impacts.
- The waiver may be reduced by the amount of other types of federal, state. or institutional grants. gift aid, or student loans.
- This waiver does not apply to study abroad courses or self-support credits.
- Waivers will not be applied retroactively to terms prior to the student's eligibility being confirmed.
- Funding for the waiver will be reviewed and revised to match final tuition charges each term after the drop deadline, as published in the Academic Calendar.
- This waiver applies to tuition only; all other fees related to each term are the financial responsibility of the student.
Application
- The Veterans' Dependent Tuition Waiver application is due to the Veteran and Military Certifying Team by the last day to drop with 100% refund for the term as published in the Academic Calendar.
- Students previously receiving the Veterans' Dependent Tuition Waiver at another Oregon public community college or university are still required to submit an OSU waiver application.
- Eligibility Questions – such as who qualifies, which programs are covered, and interpretation of the law – should be directed to the Veterans and Military Certifying Team, as we regularly review the regulation and work closely with this student population.
- Waiver Administration Questions – such as when the waiver is applied to a student’s account, whether a student can take a break and return with DTW, or how the waiver interacts with other forms of aid – should be directed to Financial Aid, who manage the operational aspects of the waiver.
