Born in Oregon, Capt Hendry earned a Bachelor’s of Science in Forestry while attending Oregon State College. While serving with the 1st Battalion 21st Field Artillery Regiment 21st Division he became a prisoner of the Japanese after the fall of Bataan in Jul 1942, and was then forced into the Bataan Death March. On 24 Oct 1944 the Arisan Maru (transporting 1,781 Prisoners of war including Capt Hendry) was torpedoed by an American Submarine and sank off the coast of China. All of the POW’s escaped the sinking Hell Ship but the Japanese refused to rescue them. Of the 1,781 prisoners only nine survived the sinking, sadly our student was not one of them. He was survived by his parents, and sister.
