2nd Lt. Van Cleve was born in Salem Oregon. He signed the draft on 16 Feb 1942 and was called to service on 12 May 1942. He started attending Oregon State College in the military. While attending Oregon State College Van Cleve became the Rosswood Club Treasurer, an Independent Student Council member, and was apart of the lamplighter group (campus magazine). He graduated in with a degree in Science and became an Officer on 7 Jul 1945. While serving with the 252nd Bomb Squadron, 3rd Base Unit he was killed in a plane crash in Medina Texas. He was survived by his wife, 2 year old daughter and parents.
