Coss, Wilbur John

Born in Portland Oregon, Capt Coss signed the draft on 16 Feb 1942 while attending Oregon State College. He enlisted into the Army Air Corps on 19 Feb 1943 in Denver, Colorado. While serving with the 82nd Fighter Squadron, 78th Fighter Group 8th Army Air Force Capt Coss had some close calls. 26 Aug 1944 he was listed as missing in action after he failed to return from a dive bombing mission in his P-47D Thunderbolt #42-26585. After dive bombing Marshalling Yard in the Charleroi area, he was heard reporting his prop was “running away”, and stated he was going to bale out.

Conn, Robert Ingalls

Born in Oregon sometime in 1918 Capt Robert Conn Graduated from Oregon Agricultural College in 1940 with a Bachelor’s of Science in Mechanical Engineering. While Serving with the Army Air Forces 2014th Ordnance Maintenance Company his airplane failed to return from a mission, his body was never recovered. He was survived by his wife, a two year old daughter, and his parents.  

Coleman, John Crosland

Born in Oregon, there isn’t much known about 1st Lt John Coleman. He died while serving with the VMSB-142, 12th Marine Air Group, 1st Marine Air Wing, there has been no documentation that states how he lost his life. He was survived by his parents, sister and brother. 1st Lt Crosland’s remains were returned from Papua New Guinea, US Armed Forces Cemetery, Finschhafen No 5 New Guinea and interred at Golden Gate on 4 Feb 1949.

Clinton, Lealand Jack

Born in Myrtle Point, Oregon, Lt (J.G.) Leland Clinton signed the draft on 16 Oct 1940 while attending Oregon State College, earning a Bachelors of Science in Forestry in 1941, and joined the Navy Reserves on 31 Mar 1943. He went missing while serving aboard the USS Indianapolis in the Philippine Sea. He was survived by his wife, parents, and his sister.

Christman, Elwyn Lewis

Born in Monitor Oregon, Lt Com Christman commanded Bomb Squadron 133 in both Kwajalein and Iwo Jima. He earned his Navy Cross in 1942 when he lead a Naval patrol during an attack with the 101st Patrol Squadron, 10th Patrol Wing flying a Navy type PBY Patrol Plane on a strong Japanese Naval Force. He dove his patrol bomber at the enemy ships a caused severe damage from multiple dropped bombs and was immediately attacked by Japanese fighter planes.

Christensen, Merle Loring

1st Lt Merle Christensen was born in Oregon and, served with the Army 24th Field Artillery Regiment. He was serving in the Philippines during the fall of Bataan, and was forced along the Bataan Death March as a Prisoner of War to the Japanese. While a prisoner at the Camp #1 Cabanatuan 1-2-3 Nueva Province Luzon Philippines 15-121 POW Camp, he was boarded onto one of the Japanese “Hell Ships”. During WWII the Japanese took transport ships and used them to transport POW’s without labeling the ships as POW Transport ships.
