Chivers, Harold Joseph

Born in Portland Oregon, 1st Lt Chivers signed the draft on 16 Oct 1940. While serving with the 35th Fighter Squadron, 8th Fighter Group, 5th Air Force 1st lt Chivers took off from 7-mile Drome near Port Moresby Papua New Guinea to intercept incoming Japanese fighter near the Port. During the mission his Airacobra  P-39F # 41-7207 was shot down. The Missing Air Crew Report Number is 16440. He was retroactively labeled killed in action on 14 Dec 1945 with his date of death being the day he was shot down. He was survived by his parents.

Childs, Leroy Winston

Born in Hood River, Oregon, Ens Childs registered for the draft on 16 Oct 1940. He went missing on 6 May 1943 around the Solomon Island when his plane crashed. According to Carol Tyler of the American Battle Monuments Commission, “In many cases when someone was listed as missing a search was initiated. If the Sailor couldn't be accounted for, there was a general rule to issue an Administrative Date of Death one year and one day after the individual was listed as missing. This is most common with air crews and sailors.” This accounts for the differences in dates of death.

Chapman, Ralph Aubrey

1st Lt Ralph Chapman was born in St Helens Oregon, he went to Oregon State College for 2 ½ years before switching to the University of Portland and graduating there. He signed the draft on 15 Oct 1940 and was called into service on 12 Mar 1942 in Portland. He was killed while flying as a bombardier on a B-24 Liberator over Formosa (Taiwan) with the 90th Bomb Group, 321st Bomb Squadron. He was buried in a group burial, on 25 Aug 1949. 1st Lt Chapman was survived by his wife, parents, and his sister. 1936 yearbook (pg 192) 1937 yearbook (pgs 219, 283) 1938 yearbook (pg 300)

Cartmill, Reece David

Born in Chicago Illinois, he signed the draft in Portland Oregon and was called into service on 12 Mar 1942 in California. TSgt Cartmill was a turret gunner and flight engineer on a B-17 flying fortress with the 385th Bomb Group, 548th Bomb Squadron. He was known by his friends to have the “Cartmill Touch” as he had the ability to get balky guns working again, even in the heat of a firefight. He personally shot down 3 german fighter planes before his aircraft B-17 #42-30717 “Man O' War” collided with another aircraft over Germany and was labeled missing in action.

Campbell, Robert Greenlee

Born in Hillsboro Oregon, 1st Lt Campbell signed the draft on 16 Oct 1940 in while a student here at Oregon State College, he was called into service in 1943. During WWII he served with the 601 Bomb Squadron, 398 Bomb Group. 1st Lt Campbell was killed while piloting the B-17G Fortress #43-38670 “Ruptured Duck” near Merseburg Germany. He was survived by his wife, a two year old daughter, parents and a brother.

Caisse, Kenneth Michael

1st Lt Caisse was born in New Mexico, he attended Oregon State College from 1938-1940, and was working on a Liberal Arts and Sciences Major. He was called to Service on 24 Oct 1941 in Camp Lee Virginia. While serving with the Army Air Force 71st Bomber Squadron, 38th Bomber Group, he served as a 1st Lt & Bombardier on the B-25D "Battlin' Biffy" #41-29701 during World War II. He went missing on the 5th of Oct in 1942 when his aircraft and crew were shot down by the Japanese Zeros over New Guinea.
